For the last three years, the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley has used Cinco de Mayo as a vehicle to celebrate cultural diversity and to bring our Spanish Speaking and English Speaking communities together.
Although a “fiesta” is not planned for 2008, we wish to use this opportunity to recognize the achievements of Spanish Speaking leaders and to encourage our community to work together to make a difference in the lives of others.
Everyone can make a difference. Caesar Chavez, American labor leader, worked to improve the rights of U.S. Farm workers. Jennifer Lopez, singer/actress, partnered with Amnesty International to launch a bilingual Web site to raise awareness of a series of rape-murders in Mexico. Musician Carlos Santana, established the Milagro Foundation for youth programs.
Many local individuals work as volunteers and as charitable givers to help those less fortunate. You can also make a difference. “VIVA UNIDA”…LIVE UNITED in your community…Every day…United Way.
