Art at the Mill, the primary fundraiser of the Clarke County Historical Association, concluded its spring showing on May 11 with another successful 16-day display of amazing art, community participation, and great sales at the Burwell-Morgan Mill in Millwood. So many new volunteers offered their time and energy, more than 300 artists (including more than 60 new ones) participated in the show and nearly 320 pieces of fine art were sold. "I've never seen anything like it," many were heard to exclaim.
This is one of the finest events in our community and takes many people to make it the beautiful, friendly, and quality experience for which it is widely known. Candy Means and Snow Fielding were instrumental in gathering volunteers, among many other things. Julie Ashby and Steve Scott again triumphed in the daunting task of hanging all the work. Candy, Mary Jane Lee, Kate Thuss, Tressa Borland Reuling, and Iona Pillion made the place sparkle with spring flowers and fabrics. Jim Avis, Janet Bechamps, Joe Guenther, Winslow McCagg, Carl Stephanus, Adam Thomas, Romy Walker, Don Wallace, and Bill Whiting contributed hours of muscle and know-how. And many, many others gave freely of their time and support. I am grateful to each and every one of you.
Thanks to the Battletown Inn for superb treats on Patrons Night and to Geneva Jackson for feeding all those starving artists so well at the Artists Reception.
A portion of the proceeds from each sale goes to the continued operation of the Burwell-Morgan Mill and the museum and archives in Berryville, as well as to the Sarah P. Trumbower Memorial Scholarship fund. This year, CCHS senior Abby Medina received the $5,000 scholarship to help send her to the Savannah School of Art and Design -- congratulations, Abby! We rely heavily on this income and are grateful every spring and fall when we have such an outpouring of community support and participation.
Now, the grinding season begins at the mill! Every Saturday through September, our volunteer millers will be grinding corn and wheat (and selling it), giving tours, and welcoming visitors from near and far. If you've never been, it is a place and experience not to be missed. Visit www.clarkehistory.org or call (540) 955-2600 for more information.
