Horses and People Briefs
Horse trails forum set Jan. 22
A horse trails forum to define the needs of horse owners in Fauquier County and create a plan for addressing them will be held in Warrenton Jan. 22.
The event is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Fauquier County Parks and Rec, Virginia Division of Forestry, the Trailblazers riding club, Fauquier Trails Coalition, and the Fauquier County Extension Service.
The event is set Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Warren Green Building in Warrenton.
Anyone with an interest in the current and future recreation needs of horse owners in Fauquier County is invited to participate in the free forum. Space is limited, so while not required, indication of attendance would help in planning. Call (540) 347-6848 or E-mail parks@fauquiercounty.gov.
Help us nose out the news
As has become standard, this is the time of year to look ahead to the approaching competition and riding seasons. And, as has become standard, this is the place for us to ask for your' help in unearthing Fauquier's horse news.
The Fauquier Times-Democrat remains the only mainstream newspaper with a dedicated Horse and Field Sports section, an award-winning part of the local county weekly that gives it an unmistakable Horse Country flair.
But the news does not emanate strictly from within — we need your help to nose out the news. Here are some guidelines to help you help us throughout 2008 and beyond:
* Sporting Calendar: This section is the most popular, most indispensable part of the section, both for competitors and for spectators. We need your help getting the word out: please send competition calendars as soon as your stable or organization decides dates. For planning purposes, area horsemen find it an invaluable resource to be able to log onto our Web site and search the entire 2008 horse sports calendar, containing all the events, big and small. Send dates as soon as possible.
* Horses and People briefs: We need to know the news: Some information tidbits float through the Horse Sports desk here in Warrenton, and we're out and about looking for stories, but, really, readers are our best resource. If you or your neighbor or friend has done something great, or you know something interesting that we might miss, call or e-mail. We aren't mind readers: Brag a little. Tell us what you've done or what you've won. That's the way we can completely report the news.
* Features: New in town? Have a great business idea? Horses winning prizes? Tell us. Again, we aren't able to attend each and every event in the region, and we definitely can't read your minds. If you or your horses, or someone you know, is performing well, say so. The Horse Sports department is always looking for story ideas.
* Photos: Any time you have a great photo idea (a den with baby foxes this spring, say, or a horse who does a trick on command) let us know. We're always able to come record the lighter side of the news.
* First foals: A popular part of our late winter-early spring papers, we're all ears to hear about who's having a baby — baby horse, that is. Call as soon as your mare is approaching her due date: we'll be ready to come and take photos; we'll aim for the first 10 foals born in the area. Just let us know.
* Your turn: Have something to say? We're always looking for new voices for columns or commentary, or try your hand at reporting. The horse sports staff is ready and able to help guide you if you are interested in writing or photography.
* More: Fauquier's horse region is full of interesting people and places. Send us your story ideas — that's the way we build the award-winning Horse and Field Sports section — with your help.

ODH plans power line 'fight' benefit
A hunt tea and silent auction held in conjunction with a joint meet Jan. 12 with the hosting Old Dominion Hounds and the visiting Casanova Hunt benefits a grassroots group fighting the Dominion Virginia Power power line expansion.
A $50 donation pays directly to the Power Line Landowners Alliance. The meet is at Windrush near Flint Hill, with the breakfast to follow next door at Barry and Laura Levine's Swayback Farm.
High-end silent auction items include a "private hunt" with ODH staff and catered breakfast to follow; a guided Chesapeake Bay fishing trip; private sailing lessons and more. Details can be found by calling (540) 675-1993 or e-mail par@tidalwave.net .
The PLA was organized in June to represent landowners whose property is crossed by, adjacent to and in the viewshed of the proposed 500 kV transmission line proposed by Dominion Power. The expanded line would follow the existing line than runs from Front Royal in Warren County, through Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper and Prince William counties.
