Foundation announces grant cycle

Teachers will get some extra time this year to apply for grants from the Clarke County Education Foundation, officials of the nonprofit organization announced.The deadline is Oct. 1 for submission of applications for grant awards for the 2008-2009 school year. After a review by the foundation’s program /allocations committee, awards will be announced next Jan. 3 and processed by next April 1, according to Executive Director Bob Stieg.
The grants are given to help teachers implement new ideas for improving the quality and effectiveness of classroom teaching. Applications are available after April 17 from the school board office or the foundation’s web site at www.ccefinc.org.
During the current academic year, the foundation stated that it awarded more than $100,000 in grants to teachers and $11,000 in scholarships to 12 students. Stieg said that although 49 teachers directly received grants in 2007-2008, more than that were impacted because “a number of these went to groups of several who got together to apply” to benefit their fourth-grade and fifth-grade classes. Over the past 11 years, the foundation has awarded more than $1.4 million in grants and scholarships.
“This is one of the programs of which we are the proudest, and one that we hope contributes to keeping our excellent teachers here in the Clarke County school system,” said foundation president John Hudson.
Founded in 1991, the foundation, overseen by a 15-member board, provides private assistance to bolster the school systems programs. An annual dinner and auction–set for Sept. 27–provides much of the funding for the grants, Stieg said.
