Board denies garage request

County supervisors Feb. 19 denied Shenandoah Farms resident Gerald Jones’ application to operate a vehicle repair shop in the garage of his home, sparking anger from some of the several dozen neighbors who had turned out at a public hearing to support him and moving Jones’ young daughter, Noel, to tears afterward as she asked Supervisor A.R. "Pete" Dunning, Jr., (R-White Post) why he opposed her father’s request.

The vote was 4-1, with Supervisor David Weiss (R-Buckmarsh/Blue Ridge) voting against a motion by Dunning to deny a special use permit and site plan for the proposed 1,200-square-foot garage.

One Shenandoah Farms resident spoke against the proposed garage, saying it would generate more traffic on the road. But several others came to Jones’ defense, saying traffic is not an issue.

Allowing Jones to work from his home, supporters told supervisors, would benefit not only his children because he is a single parent but also their community because he would have the flexibility to continue to serve as a firefighter who routinely is a first responder and repairs emergency services vehicles as well as neighbors’ vehicles.

Dunning, who represents the area, said that several neighbors who live near Jones had voiced concerns about noise and a possible adverse impact on their property values.

Jones told supervisors that he would abide by any special conditions they might set, if the shop were approved.
