Clarke County’s Chandler Rhoads slams in two points just prior to halftime of Thursday’s Bull Run District Tournament Championship, as George Mason’s Mike Schwengel looks on. Rhoads scored 25 points and after the game was named the Bull Run District ...

Eagles roll into Region B

With the threat of ice and snow hanging in the balance, the gym at Clarke County High School was filled to capacity Feb. 28.

The boys varsity basketball team hosted the George Mason Mustangs for the Bull Run District Tournament championship. A victory would assure a Region B quarterfinal game at “the Nest” -- CCHS's intimate home gym.

The Eagles appeared to run away with the game in the first half, but a stubborn Mason refused to yield before the Eagles finally put them away, 75-64.

"It was almost like two separate games.” Clarke County head coach Brent Emmart said. “We led by 26 points in the first half, and they closed it to six points in the second half.”

The win gave the Eagles their fifth consecutive Bull Run District boys basketball tournament title. With the victory, the Eagles enter this week's Region B tournament as the second overall seed behind Buckingham.

CCHS played host to Goochland Tuesday night (check out coverage in next week’s issue). Goochland knocked the Eagles out of the Region B football playoffs, and the Eagles hoped to return the favor this week.

Chandler Rhoads led the Eagles with 25 points and was named after the game the Bull Run District Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Rhoads has been the area's scoring leader all season, averaging a little more than 25 points per contest.

"Coach Emmart wasn’t too happy with the way we were playing in the third quarter.” Rhoads said. “I think we turned our defense back up in the fourth quarter.”

Also joining Rhoads on the All Bull Run District first team was senior Joe Racer. Racer added 10 points in the Eagles victory.

"We came out intense and we were all connecting.” Racer said. “In the second half, we seemed to lose some of our intensity.”

Charles Bailey, (selected to the All Bull Run District second team) seemed motivated with his first-team omission, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

"George Mason’s team never lets down.” Bailey said. “We lost some of our intensity, but if we can get back to four quarters of defense, I think we will be alright.”

The win moved the Eagles' record to 19-5. A victory against Goochland would give Emmart and Company another 20-win season.
