Boyce Councilmen runs for mayor
Longtime Boyce resident Franklin Roberts, who serves on the Boyce Town Council and previously served on the Boyce Planning Commission, has announced his candidacy for Boyce mayor.
Last month, Boyce Mayor Steve Hott announced that he will not seek a third term, leaving the seat open in the town of approximately 450 people.
So far, no other candidates have filed the necessary paperwork. The deadline to file is March 4
Roberts has lived in Clarke County most of his life. He has been a Boyce resident for more than 50 years.
"I care about the town, and I have a passion for where I live," he said.
Roberts said his goals for Boyce include keeping the town neat, clean and safe.
From his perspective, Roberts believes the town hasn't changed too drastically over the years.
"We have new houses coming in, but not all of them have been bought yet," he said.
For the past 27 year Roberts has been a pastor at Second Guildfield Baptist Church in Front Royal. He has a daughter and grandchildren in the area.
Roberts believes his experience on the town council and planning commission has given him a solid understanding of the town that would help him as mayor.
"But I'll still need to take counsel," he added.
Roberts praised Hott for his contribution to the town. "Steve has done a good job. If he was running again, I wouldn't be opposing him."
Roberts believes he is the second preacher to run for Boyce mayor. "I will try to do my best to serve my community if elected," he said.
"I'm used to being an authority, and I'm a people person," he said. "I'm a lover of people, and I still will be, whether I win or lose."
