United Way raising funds for human care needs

The 2007 year campaign was set for 1,350,000 by United Way Campaign Chairperson Tom Davison. Jim Gainer will succeed him in 2008. The year's campaign will conclude with a final report and agency appreciation reception on Jan. 11. The United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley serves the citizens of the Winchester, Clarke County, Frederick County and Shenandoah County.

If donations are not specifically invested, United Way volunteers decide how the money is distributed. Organizations that work with Clarke County residents include American Red Cross, Help with Housing and Adult Care Center, among others.

President Joe Shtulman said the campaign leaders are picked because they are already heavily involved in the community. "The team of volunteers are selected because they're community leaders and determined to make an impact," he said. Shtulman mentioned that Johnny Milleson, president of Bank of Clarke County has reached 93 percent of his campaign goal thus far.

Volunteers have regular meetings to address the concerns in the area. "[Volunteers] take a look at the needs of the community and contact heads of companies to see the economic climate," explained Shtulman, adding that campaign chairs then recommend goals for their divisions. Campaign revenue goals are set as high as possible, he said, "because the need is climbing."

Contributions can still be made to the organization at The United Way/Our Health Building offices at 329 N. Cameron St. in Winchester.
