Mayor Sponseller to step down at end of term
Berryville mayor Richard Sponseller, who was first elected in 1988, announced that he will be stepping down when his term expires June 30.
"I had tentatively made the decision before running in 2004," Sponseller explained. "I talked to [his wife] Susan and decided that if I was fortunate enough to be elected for a fifth term, it would be the last."
"Twenty years is enough, and it's time to step aside and let someone else take over," Sponseller added.
"I wish the mayor well on his retirement, said Town Manager Keith Dalton. "I think he should be proud of what he's done, and he will be missed."
"Hopefully someone will step up, and I'm sure someone will," Dalton said.
"He is definitely going to be missed, said Jay Arnold, town recorder and owner of Berryville Auto Parts and Radio Shack. "The knowledge he has in the running of the town in the last 20 years is a big asset to the town."
"I certainly hate to see him go, but I can't blame him," Arnold said. "Twenty years is a long time."
"He has been mayor for most of my adult life, and I've always enjoyed having Mr. Sponseller as mayor," said Berryville Police Chief Neal White. "I'm sad to hear the news, and it will be a big change for the town."
"I definitely wish him well, and I'm sure he will remain an active member of the downtown community," White said.
"Rick's insight, direction and dedication to the community have allowed for the thoughtful and responsible planning that has made Berryville such a wonderful place to be," said Assistant Town Manager/Planner Christy Dunkle.
Sponseller said he is confident in the town's future.
"I'm sure a good candidate or candidates will come forward," he said.

Boo!.... Mayor Sponseller for life. As a citizen of Berryville, who has lived under Rick's great leadership all my life, I' am sad to see him leave the post. Berryville still has some of the charm it once had during the early 90's. Except for the destruction of the apple orchards, Berryville is still an example of small town life. And I believe one big reason for this is Mayor Sponseller's service to this town. His leadership and undying love of Berryville as Mayor, will be missed.
