United Way fundraisers appreciated

United Way Campaign Chair Tom Davison called the campaign a "team effort that couldn't have survived without dedicated volunteers."

Davison said that he was pleased with the results despite the economic climate. He said there was "an amazing amount of support ... people really stepped up."

"We're very lucky we live in a giving community," said Rick Brown, United Way treasurer. "Community service people are very important."

The 2007 campaign will benefit United Way's target need areas: Abuse and neglect, basic needs, dependent care, health and mental health and crime and juvenile delinquency in Winchester, Clarke County, Frederick County and Shenandoah County.

Bank of Clarke County President Johnny Milleson was named as a part of the top 20 fund-raisers.

Jim Gayner, of Grafton, will succeed Tom Davison as campaign chair in 2008.

Sharon Harris of Valley Health won a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo donated by Jim Stutzman Chevrolet Cadillac Buick.

An appreciation reception catered by Umberto's Italian restaurant followed the report.
