Town decides to proceed with wastewater treatment facility plans

Whitman, Requardt and Associates of Fairfax presented a proposal for the 12-inch force main, which will run about 4 miles from the plant to the river.

Stearns and Wheeler of Roanoke, in conjunction with Whitman, Requardt and Associates, presented the design proposal for the wastewater treatment facility. A new plant needs to be constructed by 2010 in order to comply with state requirements.

The total project cost for the force main is projected at about $4.3 million, Dalton said. The wastewater treatment facility will cost approximately $20 million.

Geotechnical testing and an environmental assessment will need to be done as part of the process of creating the design documents. The plans will also indicate what, if any, blasting will need to be done.

The force main is estimated to be completed in early 2010, whereas the wastewater treatment facility will not be completed until late 2010.

Town Manager Keith Dalton said the committee did not have any major issues with either proposal, so Dalton, with prior permission from Town Council, signed agreements for the described services.
