New leader for soil and water district
The Lord Fairfax Soil & Water Conservation District elected new officers for its Board of Directors for the 2008 calendar year. The district includes Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren counties and the city of Winchester.
Bernard C. “Bud” Nagelvoort stepped down as chairman after being elected in 2005. He has taken his previous position as treasurer.
"It was a pretty time consuming job and I felt that it was time to step down," said Nagelvoort.
During his previous tenure as treasurer, Nagelvoort was awarded the Watershed connections outstanding director award for “outstanding conservation leadership work in the Shenandoah River Watershed” by the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in 2002.
Previously he was an administrative assistant to a member of Congress where his accomplishments include development of the Federal Clean Water Act Amendments of 1972 and 1977.
He was also a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries., and served as the director of administration of National Trout Unlimited.
Joan Comanor of Shenandoah County succeeds Nagelvoort as chairwoman. She was elected vice-chair in 2005, and she still serves as chair of the district’s education and information committee.
She was a previous employee of the federal government as a senior executive at the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
She also serves as the chair of the Woodstock Tree Board, is a member of the Woodstock Enhancement Committee and she serves on the Shenandoah Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council.
James D. Lawrence, Jr. of Winchester was elected vice-chair. Lawrence served as director since 2002. He also serves as the district's Easement Committee chair and as the Shenandoah Resource Conservation & Development Council chair.
Amanda Campbell of Middletown was re-elected secretary of the board. She has served as secretary for 13 years and also serves as assistant treasurer.
