Stark Image Photography Studio opens in Berryville
Cathy Stark is not new to the photography business, so the opening of her photography studio, Stark Image, located at 100 W. Main St., is merely another step for her.Stark, who lives in Berryville, has been freelancing from her home for the past 10 years.
"This is really an expansion," she explained. "Now I have room to lay everything out."
Stark, who graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, has worked in photography for a number of years. She currently shoots in digital, although she also knows how to process photos the traditional way.
Stark works in a variety of areas – she previously did publicity photography for Giant stores, which included photographing grand openings and taking employee portraits.
She has worked for home improvement companies, taking photographs to be used for promotional materials. Stark also does shots of new products for area businesses such as Lavender Moon.
She also enjoys shooting people and animals. Some of her work has included shooting Boy Scout Troop 34 (of which her sons were a part), and events such as an eighth grade dance and a couple's 50th anniversary party.
She has spent a day at Berryville Primary School, documenting a "day in the life" at the school.
She said she enjoys shooting people and family portraits, an area of her work she would like to expand.
"I would like to shoot more people," she said, and with her new space, she has plenty of room in which to set up lighting and backdrops for portraits.
One of the nice things about digital photography, Stark said, is the ability to enhance it with Photoshop. She is a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.
While she does not believe in using Photoshop to change the essence of a person's face, she said it can be helpful if, for example, someone has a smudge of makeup under her eye. Stark can remove the smudge with Photoshop.
It can also be useful when taking a shot of a group of people. If there is a crying child in the group who only looks happy in one shot, she can transfer the child to a different shot where the other people in the group look their best.
She is willing to spend as long as it takes to make sure a portrait meets the subjects' expectations.
Stark will be available in her studio by appointment, and can be reached at 540-539-8838.
"This is just thrilling, and I'm very excited to be working more with the community," Stark said.
