Investigators interview shooting victim in hospital

Clarke County Sheriff Anthony Roper said late July 10 that investigators that day had interviewed one of the victims of a shooting incident that occurred the day before in White Post and had obtained “information that may prove helpful” as they continue their probe and search for a suspect.

Roper identified the victim as Daniel Guerrero-Lopez, 28, a landscape worker. He is being treated for a single gunshot wound at an unidentified hospital in the Washington, D.C., area where he was taken by helicopter on Wednesday  and is expected to recover, Roper said.

An autopsy was performed by the Medical Examiner’s Office in Fairfax County on a second male shooting victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene on Nelson Road on Wednesday and who remains unidentified, Roper said. “The victim died of multiple gunshot wounds,” Roper said.

“Further tests are being conducted,” Roper added, saying, however, “The results of these tests will not be known for some time.”

Roper did not say on what part or parts of the body either of the victims was shot.

The Sheriff’s Office is following leads regarding potential family members with the hope of making a positive identification of the second victim, Roper said.  The name that investigators were given for the deceased victim, Roper said, “is different than identification papers that he had on his person.”

Law enforcement personnel in Charlotte, N.C., and in Mecklenburg County, N.C., are assisting with the investigation to try to find possible family members, Roper said. The sport utility vehicle in which the victims were found had North Carolina license plates, Roper said.

The Sheriff’s Office hopes to receive the two victims’ Immigration and Naturalization Service files July 11, Roper said.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office got “a 911 telephone call from an apparent passer-by indicating two shooting victims were located along Nelson Rd.,” according to an initial press release from Roper.

When emergency personnel from the Sheriff’s Office and area fire companies responded, they found the victims in a black Cadillac sport utility vehicle in a driveway on that road, according to the release.

Although he said that Guerrero-Lopez gave investigators an indication as to what could  have caused the shooting to occur, Roper said, “We’re not at liberty to discuss that kind of details right at the present time.”

Guerrero-Lopez “provided us insight on some stuff that can be very useful to us,” Roper said.

The whereabouts of the suspect, who was identified as Jose Cuevas-Gonzalez, 53, remains unknown, Roper said.

“We’re still actively seeking him,” Roper said. But, as of Thursday evening when he released an update on the investigation, Roper said that no warrant had been issued for Cuevas-Gonzalez’ arrest.

Roper said that on Wednesday his office had executed a search warrant on a residence in Clarke County where Cuevas-Gonzalez lived. But he did not specify the exact location or what, if anything, was found.

The last vehicle known to have been driven by Cuevas-Gonzalez was recovered in Jefferson County, W.Va., on Wednesday, Roper said. The suspect has family ties in California and Texas, he added.

Cuevas-Gonzalez was a handyman, gardener and farm worker at the home where the car containing the victims was found, Roper said.
