Winchester Medical names new president

Vice President of Operations at Winchester Medical Center Al Pilong recently was named the organization's new president. His tenure will begin July 1. Since joining Valley Health in 2005, Pilong has held administrative responsibility in various centers including the heart and vascular, orthopedics and rehabilitation, neurosciences and bariatric services.

Former WMC President Reese Jackson will assume the position of Valley Health Chief Operating Officer.

Local agency a winner

The Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging is a winner of the 2008 Best Practices Award by the Commonwealth Council on Aging. The Front Royal-based agency has a branch located in Winchester that provides services to seniors in Clarke County.

As part of a curriculum in which students conduct their clinicals and perform community service projects, students at local schools, colleges and universities work with seniors in the area to provide health related programs.

Resident receives Ambassador award

Berryville resident Cynthia Green, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech University who received a bachelor of science in agricultural sciences last month, was awarded the Outstanding Ambassador Award.

The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences honors an ambassador for her leadership and service to the program and to the college.

United Way welcomes new affiliates

Two new agencies have been accepted for affiliate membership with the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley in 2008. Cheers Heritage Child Care in Clarke County and Skyline CAP Head Start in Shenandoah County will join the other 29 affiliate organizations working with United Way NSV.

Cheers Heritage Child Care provides child care services for local families. Skyline CAP Head Start works to prepare preschool children for learning readiness, support services for families and provides safe, affordable day care for low income families.

Lions Club member receives award

The Virginia Council of Governors' Distinguished Service Medal was presented to Clarke County Lion Sharon Hart at the Lions of Virginia State Convention in Bristow on May 17. The medal presented by District Governor Lion Marty Stollis medal is awarded to Lions who have distinguished themselves in service to their community.
