Adams announces candidacy for Berryville Mayor

Berryville resident and former real estate agent Alyssa Adams has announced her candidacy in the Berryville mayoral race. She will oppose town Council member Wilson Kirby.

Adams, 48, grew up in Reston and has lived in Berryville for about six years. She was in mortgage marketing before working as a real estate agent. Most recently she has been caring for her mother.

Adams said she decided to run when she heard that current mayor Richard Sponseller was stepping down after 20 years.

When Mr. Sponseller said it was time to give someone else a chance, I said, ‘why not?’” Adams said. “I wouldn’t be running if he [Sponseller] were running again.”

Adams said that as a newer resident of the town, she could bring a fresh perspective and outlook on local issues.

To qualify as a candidate, Adams had to collect 125 signatures from town residents.

Everybody was positive and glad to see me,” she said of her experience collecting the signatures. “I went to each different area of the town, and everybody was receptive.”

Adams said she would not come into the office of mayor with a specific agenda.

I would like to be a voice for the people,” she said.

One thing she would like to do is have a town meeting, a place for residents to express their concerns and hopes for Berryville.

I want to see what they want,” she said.

Adams said that in her conversations with residents, she has found that some people are concerned locally with nationwide issues, such as the economy and the housing market.

I would want to make sure that what happens nationwide will (negatively) affect us as little as it possibly can,” she said.

Adams is organizing a get-together, scheduled for March 29 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Olympic Flame restaurant in Berryville. She described the event as an open house and meet and greet. There also will be live music.

It will be come as you are, and a way for me to thank the people who signed their names for me,” Adams said.

She hopes residents come to the restaurant to meet her and discuss the issues important to them.

Adams said she enjoys living in Berryville and would like an opportunity to give back to the community as mayor.

The folks I’ve met here have been just wonderful,” she said. “I like the closeness and sense of community.”
