PAX coordinator attends national conference
Berryville resident Tanya Barton is back from New York City, where she attended the 2008 national meeting last week of PAX, the Program of Academic Exchange. PAX is an educational foundation dedicated to promoting international understanding.
Barton is the area community coordinator for PAX. She was invited to the conference in recognition of her work on behalf of cross-cultural education in Virginia as a community coordinator for the PAX School Year USA.
The program provides a home stay experience for high-school students from more than 35 countries.
This year's PAX national meeting focused on the value of cross-cultural learning opportunities at the high school level. Barton reports that the cultural diversity and first-hand learning brought to U.S. high schools by exchange students is increasingly valued, as the country moves into the 21st century's global market and increasing competitive workplace.
Barton has the complete dossiers of boys and girls from various countries, all of whom would welcome a “home away from home” in Virginia for the 2008-2009 school year. A host family need not have teenagers of its own or provide a private bedroom. Retirees, young couples and single parents are welcome to apply.
For more information, contact Barton at (540) 955-9135 or the PAX national office at (800) 555-6211.
