Roberts, Hott, Cambell winn

Voters in Boyce Tuesday elected town council member Franklin Roberts as their new mayor. He won 41 votes compared with 32 for challenger Erica Kelble, a member of the town council and planning commission.

Voters also returned council member Melvina “Billie” Hott to office, with 52 votes, and elected newcomer Richard Campbell to a council seat, with 35 votes.

Their four-year terms begin July 1.

Seventy-four of the town’s 307 registered voters turned out at the Boyce Fire Hall to cast ballots, Clarke County Voter Registrar Barbara Bosserman said.

I want to thank all of those who voted for me and had the confidence in me to vote for me to become the mayor,” Roberts said Tuesday night. “I will work my best to see the town reach its height.” Roberts said he has previously served on the planning commission for approximately six months.

Although she said she was “disappointed and sad” at not winning the mayoral post, Kelble said of Roberts, “I think he’ll be a good mayor.”

I think it’s a fantastic turnout for Boyce, which is really encouraging to get that much participation,” Kelble added.

Saying she was honored and also thanking Boyce residents for their confidence in her, Hott, who has served on town council off and on since 1988, said, “To vote me back in, they must approve of the way I’ve handled my job so far.”

We just try to serve and do our best,” Hott added.

Hott’s son, Steve, is the current mayor.

Also thanking supporters and calling Boyce “a great place to live,” Campbell said, “I’m going to work really hard to do the best job I can for them.”

Campbell said his most immediate goal “is to get into the team and get to know the rest of the people on the council.”

Richard Walker, who currently serves on the planning commission and volunteers at the Boyce firehouse, had also sought one of the two council seats up for grabs, coming in third with 29 votes.

Everyone was a good choice,” Walker said, commenting on the results. “I think all the candidates were equally qualified and had a genuine interest in serving the citizens of Boyce.”
