Special guest highlights annual service
The Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, LTG Eric B. Schoomaker, will be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day service 2 p.m. Sunday at Rose Hill Park in Berryville.
The program will include patriotic music, military salutes, prayers and speeches, according to the service program.
Veterans who are residents of the Martinsburg Virginia Medical Center and the Walter-Reed Medical Center will be in attendance.
This year, instead of a choir, sheet music will be give to the audience for a group sing-along of “America the Beautiful.”
John Gallagher, the Commander of the American Legion Post 41 and a member of the Veterans Foreign Affairs Post 9760, said that veterans going back to the Revolutionary War are buried in Clarke County cemeteries.
Soldiers should be honored “because they sacrifice so much for our freedoms, especially those who make the ultimate sacrifice,” Gallagher said.
The American Legion and VFW will be visiting cemeteries around the county to put American flags at the graves of fallen soldiers on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
“Remember the soldiers and keep them in your prayers,” said Gallagher, of what citizens can do throughout the year to show their support.
“Say howdy [to service members] and thank you for your service,” he said.
A group of wounded soldiers from the “Warrior Transition Brigade,” an organization that strives to improve outpatient care for wounded soldiers, will attend the service.
