Boy achieves rank of Eagle Scout
The Boy Scouts of America awarded Dennis Heflin II the rank of Eagle Scout last month. Only 4 percent of boy scouts reach the rank of Eagle Scout.
The ceremony was held in the library of the University of Virginia’s Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce.
For his Eagle Service Project, Dennis assembled a team of donors, fellow scouts and volunteers. With this team he built two buildings at the Clarke Ruritan Fairgrounds. The buildings will be used by the Ruritans to store supplies and shelter for people who work the admission gates.
Dennis, who is 13 years old, is a member of BSA Troop 11, which meets weekly at the State Arboretum of Virginia on Blandy Farm.
Dennis joined the boy scouts in September 2001. As a Cub Scout he earned their highest award, the Arrow of Light. He has served in many positions within his troop, including patrol leader, quartermaster and chaplain’s aide. He is a member of the BSA Honor Society, known as the Order of the Arrow.
Dennis is a volunteer for several local organizations. He has volunteered at Historic Long Branch Easter egg hunts, fishing derbies and balloon festivals. He worked at the State Arboretum's Garden Fair and Arborfest festivals. Annually, he works with a group clearing trash from the Clarke County Ruritan Fairgrounds. For the Shenandoah Area Council, he has worked trail clearing, camp site repair, and at the BSA Camp Rock Enon.
Dennis has worked as an assistant counselor at Merit Badge University for the past two years. He helped Troop 11 deliver and set up twenty computers at the Evan’s Children’s Home in Winchester. He is a member of the Troop 11 Color Guard and has opened and closed many events in Clarke, Warren, Frederick and Jefferson counties.
Dennis is the son of Theresa and Dennis Heflin of Boyce. He is a seventh-grader at Johnson Williams Middle School in Berryville.
