Clarke boys see season end

FALLS CHURCH -- George Mason’s Nick Smirniotopoulos scored a soccer trifecta May 22 as the Mustangs defeated Clarke County 3-0 in the Bull Run District boys’ soccer tournament finals.

The Clarke County Eagles, ended its season at 6-12-1 on Monday with a 4-1 setback to Wilson Memorial in Fisherville in the opening round of the Region B tournament.

"At times this game was very frustrating," CCHS coach Andrew Porter said after the Mason loss. "George Mason has a great team and they did a great job tonight. I really thought at times we were a little intimidated by them. We only had four shots on goal, and you’re not going to win many games with that few shots."

George Mason, now 14-2-1, defeated visiting Stonewall Jackson 3-0 Monday in the Region quarterfinals.

Clarke County had four shots on goal for the entire game and were held to one goal shot in the second half. Mason, meanwhile, took 26 shots.

At times we got real frustrated,” Porter said. “George Mason is a heck of a team.”

Bryant Henriquez., Clarke County all-district forward, said it was tough to get shots on George Mason.

Mason brought everything they had,” Henriquez said. “We had them. We came up flat-footed in the second half.”

Mason coach Arthur Iwanicki said his team knew it had to stop Henriquez in order to win.

He (Henriquez) was the only one who could beat us,” Iwanicki said.

Mason netted one goal in the first half and two in the second half.
