Eagle girls win Region track title
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Clarke County High School captured the Region B girls track and field crown here May 23, racking up 82 points.
London Brown of Clarke won the triple jump with a personal-best 34-02.5, then claimed fourth in the high jump. Teammates Keyaira Newman and Tara Fields placed third and fourth in the shot put, respectively.
Amanda Reap led the Eagles in the 100-meter hurdles with a win. Reap also placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and was a member of the third-place 1,600-meter relay team.
CCHS's boys were third as a team, but the Eagles totaled 20 points in the 1,600 meters. Chris York led the way with a second-place showing.
After missing the district championships with an injury, the Eagles' Charles Bailey won the 200-meter dash in 22.68 seconds. Ben Veilleux added another victory for Clarke in the 3,200 meters, setting a regional mark with a time of 9:26.76 minutes.
Last week, the Eagle girls won the district title and the boys placed second by 1/2 of a point. The State meet will be May 31 at Radford University.
RHOADS TO AIR FORCE: Chandler Rhoads, the career scoring leader at CCHS, has announced he will play Division I college basketball for the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The Eagles posted a 73-17 record during Rhoads' prep career. He finished with 1,638 points and hit 25.8 points per game as a senior.
ALL-DISTRICT: Clarke County had seven athletes gain first team All Bull Run District recognition.
In softball, catcher Brianna Smith and pitcher Jordan Wolford were first teamers and second baseman Lauren McCabe, outfielders Tara Fields and Kate Poston and pitcher Rachel Buckner were second teamers.
In baseball, third sacker Cliff Webb was a first teamer. Outfielder Tyler Lee and DH Jeremy Batka gained second-team honors.
In boys soccer, Bryant Henriquez was a first teamer. Denis Vilanueva and goalie Ray Smetanick gained second-team recognition.
In girls soccer, three Eagles (Danielle Moyer, Katheryne Lawson and Brittany Chandler) gained first-team honors. Another CCHS trio (Christel Tanner, Brecklyn Bodkin and Tori Russell) made the second team.
GIRLS LOSE: CCHS fell to Wilson Memorial 1-0 Monday in the Region softball tourney quarterfinal. Last Wednesday, in the district semifinals, CCHS beat Rappahannock 3-1. Then, in the district finals the next day, Madison County posted a 4-0 victory over the Eagles.
